About

Not Approved by the Comics Code Authority… is the next iteration of a series of projects organized by Joseph Lupo involving artists who are inspired by comics.

This interview series is directly inspired by Laura Berman’s Reflections on Color and Printmaking. Utilizing a short interview style that focuses on a specific aspect of one’s artistic practice. This interview series is intended to be a similar style of short conversational answers to a set of questions but focusing on comics and how artists use the style and format in their work. While some interviews may feature comics creators, this interview series will also feature artists whose work is directly or indirectly influences by comics.

Joseph Lupo’s own work is heavily influenced by Western comics. Lupo’s work uses comics to create images that often confuse or subvert viewer’s expectations. Past group projects organized by Lupo include two print portfolios (Not Approved by the Comics Code Authority… and Not Approved by the Comics Code Authority…TOO!) and an exhibition (Shame of the City) focused on reimagining a single Marvel comic book.

Joseph Lupo has given many talks and demonstrations about creating mini comics, using comics in K-12 classroom curriculum, comics as a pathway to literacy, and the history of Western comics.
